Obama Camp Raps Ludacris' "Offensive" Rhymes

Talk about politically incorrect.

This week's campaign propaganda has already seen John McCain's ode to Barack Obama, Britney and Paris. Now it's been raised a Ludacris.

Team Obama is blasting a well-meaning though wholly inappropriate diss track from the rapper targeting Obama's opponents, declaring the cut "outrageously offensive."

"Ludacris is a talented individual, but he should be ashamed of these lyrics," Obama spokesman Bill Burton said.

"As Barack Obama has said many, many times in the past, rap lyrics today too often perpetuate misogyny, materialism, and degrading images that he doesn't want his daughters or any children exposed to."

All qualities Luda's tune has in spades.

In the track, alternately called "Politics (Obama Is Here)" or "Politics As Usual," the rapper proves himself an equal-opportunity offender, going after Clinton, the Rev. Jesse Jackson, President Bush and, of course, McCain.

After suggesting himself as a viable vice presidential candidate, Ludacris raps, "Hillary hated on you, so that bitch is irrelevant," and, later, "Jesse talking slick and apologizing for what? If you said it then you meant it how you want it have a gut."

McCain and Bush arguably get the worst of his rhyming ire: "McCain don't belong in any chair unless he's paralyzed...Yeah, I said it, 'cause Bush is mentally handicapped...You the worst of all 43 presidents."

Earlier this year, Obama told Rolling Stone he was a fan of the rapper, whose real name is Christopher Bridges, and thought him to be an impressive businessman.

On that opinion, we're guessing, Obama's for change.

California judge rules early cell phone termination fees illegal

In one of the most significant legal rulings in the tech industry this year, a Superior Court judge in California has ruled that the practice of charging consumers a fee for ending their cell phone contract early is illegal and violates state law.

The preliminary, tentative judgment orders Sprint Nextel to pay customers $18.2 million in reimbursements and, more importantly, orders Sprint to stop trying to collect another $54.7 million from California customers (some 2 million customers total) who have canceled their contracts but refused or failed to pay the termination fee.

While an appeal is inevitable, the ruling could have massive fallout throughout the industry. Without the threat of levying early termination fees, the cellular carriers lose the power that's enabled them to lock customers into contracts for multiple years at a time. And while those contracts can be heinously long, they also let the carriers offer cell phone hardware at reduced (subsidized) prices. AT&T's two-year contract is the only reason the iPhone 3G costs $199. If subsidies vanish, what happens to hardware lock-in? Could an era of expensive, but unlocked, hardware be just around the corner? It's highly probable.

Of course, the carriers aren't going to take this lying down. Early termination fees are seen as critical to business, so carriers are expected to look for ways to reclassify the fees (such as by calling them "rates," part of the arcane set of laws that covers the telecommunications industry). The industry is also pushing for the federal government to step in and claim oversight over the early termination fee issue, which would invalidate any state ruling. The FCC is generally more tolerant of such fees, though Chairman Kevin Martin has proposed a plan whereby the fees are decreased the closer you are to the end of your contract.

The FCC may also buy the argument that, since carriers are nationally based (and consumers can use their phones anywhere in the country), that a single policy should apply across the nation, rather than creating a patchwork of legislation that could lead to confusion and chaos caused by having 50 different policies.

Is the early termination fee dead? Not yet, but it's looking a little haggard.

Supreme Court Rules Marijuana Smell in Vehicle Not Enough to Arrest/Search

The Washington Supreme Court ruled July 17 that police cannot arrest passengers simply for being in a car that smells of marijuana. The unanimous decision overturned a 29-year-old precedent allowing police to search or arrest passengers if they smelled pot near a car.

The case, State v. Grande, began with a 2006 traffic stop in Skagit County. Driver Lacee Hurley and passenger Jeremy Grande were arrested by a state trooper during a traffic stop after he smelled pot coming from their car. The trooper searched the pair, finding a pipe and a small amount of pot on Grande. Both were charged with drug offenses. At a pretrial hearing, Grande's judge ruled there was no specific probable cause for his arrest and suppressed the evidence. But the Skagit County Superior Court overturned that ruling, citing a 1979 appellate court ruling saying the smell of pot smoke coming from a car was probable cause to arrest all the occupants.

But the state Supreme Court said federal case law since 1979 has eroded the legal footing of that decision. Officers need additional evidence that each passenger broke the law, the court held.

"Our cases have strongly and rightfully protected our constitution's protection of individual privacy. The protections... do not fade away or disappear within the confines of an automobile," Justice Charles Johnson wrote for the court.

"We hold that the smell of marijuana in the general area where an individual is located is insufficient, without more, to support probable cause for arrest. Where no other evidence exists linking the passenger to any criminal activity, an arrest of the passenger on the suspicion of possession of illegal substances, and any subsequent searches, is invalid and an unconstitutional invasion of that individual's right to privacy," the opinion concluded.

The ruling won quick praise from drug reformers and civil libertarians. "As a general statement, it's a step back from the direction that our government has been going as we're veering into a sort of surveillance society," Alison Holcomb of the American Civil Liberties Union's Washington chapter told the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. "It strikes me as refreshing that the court has reaffirmed the values that our constitution calls for."

Seattle Hempfest organizer Vivian McPeak told the newspaper it was not uncommon for people to be arrested, jailed, stigmatized, and have their property seized simply for being in a vehicle with someone carrying or smoking pot. "A lot of people have gone down because of these vehicle offenses," he said. "Being in a car used to be one of those wrong-place, wrong-time kind of situations."

Grande's attorney, David Zuckerman, cheered the ruling, but added it was "unfortunate" it took so long to overturn previous state case law on drug-smell arrests. "I think it's led to an awful lot of innocent people getting handcuffed by the side of the road just because they happened to be in a car that smells of marijuana," Zuckerman

Hello everybody and welcome back to our community. I always ask myself what do I have to do so every girl on the street would come up and talk to me. Thats what I always ask myself. The caped crusader is getting the royal treatment these days. First with the upcoming Dark Knight film and now with this straight-to-video anthology of six anime shorts. The anthology will be entitled Batman: Gotham Knight and will directed by Bruce Timm, producer and co-creator of television’s long running Batman: the Animated Series and will take place between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. Twitch is reporting that Satishi Kon of Perfect Blue and Millennium Actress may be directing one of the segments. The anthology is being written by David Goyer (writer of Blade and Batman Begins), Josh Olson, Brian Azzarello, Greg Rucka, Jordan Goldberg and Alan Burnett.

This is very cool but the great part about this is who will be responsible for the animation. Madhouse, Studio 4°C and Production I.G. of Japanese Manga and anime fame are partnering with DC Comics to bring their unique visions of Batman to life. I have been waiting to see Batman brought to life through anime for a long time. From the above video, this looks very good. I can’t wait to see that Deadshot segment. Soul Calibur IV

Oh, so that's why we got a new trailer today. Namco Bandai have announced that Soul Calibur IV will be released in North America on July 29, in both vanilla and metal-box-collectors edition varieties. Those throwing down the $80 for the premium edition will get the standard, afore-mentioned metal box, a comic book, a "tournament kit" (no idea what that actually is) and access to "extra customization content".


Out of the complete Soul Calibur 4 cast, 33 characters have been revealed like Ivy and Tira, but we thought it was time to list the Soul Calibur 4 characters below that have been confirmed for the upcoming July 29th, 2008, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 fighting game.

Darth Vader and Yoda, characters from the Star Wars universe, are confirmed to be playable guest characters but exclusive to different platforms. Vader will be on the PS3 and Yoda will be on the Xbox 360, however it was stated in issue 179 of GameInformer magazine that “Namco was nice enough to concede that the second characters may be available for download on the respective consoles at a later date.”

Madden NFL 2009 Team Rankings

Well, I'm still here and a lot has happened since the last time I checked in. I won the Madden Community Tournament on 09 and that makes the first ever sweep as I won yesterday's NCAA 09 tournament. Madden Wars is back up so all the rest of my impressions will be over there along with a new video of a full game once I get it encoded. It's been a long day so stay tuned for stuff tomorrow night. Madden NFL 2009

I have been writing this article for the last week or so but every time I get ready to publish it I receive more details about online play, online features, online leagues, and where EASW fits into all of this. As most of you know a couple of weeks ago I was able to attend EA’s Football Community Day where a handful of guys were able to play the new football titles (Madden, NCAA and Head Coach) for this fall. Although we did not get access to the game online we were able to talk to Ryan Ferwerda (EA’s Madden Online Guy) about online and what’s in store for us when Madden is released.

Not there ……at least not yet.

I’ve always been one of those guys who likes to get the bad news out of the way so I can end the conversation with good stuff. Before I start, please know that I’m an online guy and that I play online a lot so other than the gameplay; online features, online functions, and online stability, are right at the top of my list. So let’s get right to the disappointing stuff or lack of about online play. One of the most asked about online features that people asked me about when I told them I was going to play the game early was the ability to save depth charts online. Unfortunately this will not be available online this year. I talked to Ryan Ferwerda and Phil Frazier and they assured me that it would be in the game for 2010 (actually said they would take me to dinner if it wasn’t). I’m still disappointed about that feature not being in the game because depending on what team I play with, it takes a minute or two for me to make my adjustments and substitutions. The good thing about the game this year; that may help alleviate that, is that now you can make substitutions on the fly. Maybe that won’t be that bad, but still a bear that it’s not in this year.

No web component for Online Madden Leagues including NCAA Dynasty Leagues …… ouch!

I wasn’t going to include this piece of bad new but I felt it was necessary and if anything else to show how disappointed I am with this. This news just came out a couple of days ago but is a big blow to the online community. I still don’t understand why EA continues to put online features on the back burner. Once again the EA Haters are all over the place with “NFL 2K5 had online leagues with a web presence, this is what you get when you have a monopoly of the NFL License”. I can’t even argue with that because I truly feel that if 2K was in the mix that EA would have been had leagues, but it just seems that EA is more concerned with putting resources into “EA Rewind” and other things that cater to casual gamers. If you are reading this EA, “Stop trying to cater to people who haven't picked up your game in 20 years and give back to the guys who have been loyal throughout the years.”

I know that online only makes up about 10% of all Madden buyers but I’m just frustrated. This is a big blow to Madden leagues to say the least … sigh …. I mean what good is it to have leagues if you have to log in to your console every time you want to check the standings, schedule, or leading rushing stats. This is probably even worse for Online Dynasty which was supposed to track Heisman candidates and although you can probably sign on to your console and check, many won’t and many leagues will fold for lack of interest.

Ok, now on to the good stuff.

Online Leagues – YESSSSS!

Finally! Yesssss! About time!!! Those were the 3 things I said (not in that order) when I heard that EA was going to have online leagues this year. Now other than spectator mode this is probably one of the oldest wishlist items on every site. One of the problems with EA’s online leagues back in 2005 (I know you forgot about those) is that the commissioner didn’t have any kind of power. Well EA is giving the commish a lot of power.

Here are some online league features:

Ø Commish can set up a 2-32 team league

Ø Ability to have a flex schedule

Ø Commish can turn unique teams off or on. Meaning that you can have a league with all Dolphins if you choose or all AFC teams

Ø Commish can boot people

Ø Commish can award a trophy to Champion

Ø Commish can set the skill level of the league – all league members would have to play at that skill level

Ø Injuries do not carry over

Ø 1 for 1 trades

Ø Full player stats

Online League Q&A with Ryan Ferwerda (EA)

Q. Are the trophies customizable or just one generic trophy?

A. The trophies are actually the same ones from the front end. The commish sets the trophy from one of the 15 available. You can also have your own logo for the leaguee that is selected from a large set of logos.

Q. Does your online profile show how many trophies you won?

A. As of now, no, but we are still trying to get it in. Like I said, can’t commit to it now though.

Q. How much power does the commish have? Sim games? Reject trades?

A. Commish can Sim playoff games only, but they can kick someone who isn’t playing their regular season games. They can’t reject trades.

Q. As far stats, what exactly does that include? Defensive stats?

A. We basically use the full franchise stat db, so any stat you see in franchise, you’ll see in Online Leagues.

Q. Does the commish have to be a team in the league?

A. Yes.
